Where Has the Summer Gone?

Yesterday was Business Day at my older two kids’ school. It is the day when we get their uniforms, school supplies, check out the events that will be occuring during the school year, and the most important part – finding out who their teachers will be! It is always  interesting how the kids have evolved from year to year during this time of summer. Business day is a reminder that our summer is indeed, coming to a close. My 9 year old son is now at the stage where he wishes summer was 9 months long and school would happen within a three month period of time. My husband and I, on the other hand, simply stood in the chaos of families, wondering where has the summer gone?

Summer is always exciting because it is a time to really focus on quality time with the family. Routines and schedules are not as rigid and there is a freedom in allowing our children to simply be themselves while relaxed in a mess of legos and crayons without the worry of deadlines, homework, projects, etc. Summer is wonderful in that excursions and adventures can occur without much time constraints. However, there is somewhat of a double-edged sword for me. As much as I love summer vacation with my children, I also have the personality that needs a little structure in my life. So, when Business Day at the school occurs, it reminds me that structure will soon seep its way into our household and I will again, be reminded that another summer has passed in the blink of an eye and my children will continue to grow another year older. A testament in needing to buy new shoes and clothes and recognizing that my children will soon be bigger than me.

As I prepare for the new school year, I always like to look back and see where exactly our summer went….

We always love to kick off summer with Disneyland because the rest of the summer is blocked out for us.

Within a week that school was out, my two girls performed in their very first dance recital. That was most definitely an adventure for me, to say the least. (I am NOT a dance mom! I am NOT a dance mom! I am NOT a dance mom!)
I repeat, I am NOT a dance mom! I am NOT a dance mom! Oh, who are we kidding - my daughters do 5 hours of dance a week!

Next, an incredibly short trip to one of my favorite cities – San Francisco. A short time to visit with my family so that my kiddos can get some grandparents (and cousin) time.

Directly after San Francisco is the nice, hot drive to the Central Valley to see my girls as the cutest flower girls for my sister-in-law’s wedding.
Tutus galore!

Next stop – the Lake! The nice feel of Neveda when it is 115 degrees and there is no internet access!

Our summer is no longer complete without my son’s strong need and love for boys’ camp. It is always hard, but incredibly rewarding to see him after.
The two little girls were quite sad to see their big brother off.

While my son is away, the girls play. Actually, they go to Vacation Bible School to keep themselves preoccupied!

Then, there is the ever-so-relaxing days of tennis, basketball, golf, swim lessons, and dance lessons. So, park time is needed in between all those lessons!

Last, is of course, mommy time! Mommy loves walking an outdoor mall in Newport so that I can indulge in my Lette Macarons and blended coffee. And, while I do that and absorb some vitamin D before Fall kicks in, my children surround a fountain and make wishes for summer to not end…
Looks like some serious wishing is going on...

Enjoy the rest of your summer vacation! I know we will!
